Third-party RAID HBAs for older Sun servers?

Loud-SlopeOct 12 2022

Hey all -
We've got a couple of older Sun Microsystems SunFire x4250 servers that we're hoping to bump a little extra life out of. Unfortunately, the standard Sun STK RAID INT (Cougar) RAID HBA that came with it is a rebadged Adaptec ASR-5805 which was only supported with the Adaptec arcconf tool up to RHEL 6 and its variants - as that's now deprecated and RHEL 8 is out, we were hoping to move to that, but even with the kmod aacraid driver slipstreamed into the Alma Linux installer, it doesn't appear as though the latest arcconf utility supports my controller - and the version that does, doesn't support RHEL 8-based distros.
With this in mind, we were thinking of upgrading our RAID HBA to something a little more modern and supported, either Adaptec or LSI, that offers their manufacturer-solution to support RHEL 8-based distros such as Alma Linux 8, which is what we've settled on using. Will older Sun servers play nice with an aftermarket, third-party RAID HBA?
